Body Fat Scale

Noticed this Body fat scale is on sale right now at Amazon for $38 with free shipping.

  • Not all body fat scales are the same. For example, mine gives you a setting for adult and athlete. If you are somewhere in the middle, its not an accurate reading (I usually take the average between the two). The Tanita scale that don't have the athlete or adult setting seems to be more closer to my true body body fat %.

Although your body fat % reading might depend on which scale you have, you can still use it as reference on progress that you are making. If you were 20% on the same scale a week ago, and 18% on the same scale a week later, that's a loss in fat %. Keep in mind, your body converts converts unused carbs to fat while you sleep so you will generally have the highest rating in the morning, and the lowest rating at night. I would track both readings seperately.

  • Just a minor correction to the above. The large discrepancy in BF% between night and morning comes mainly from dehydration. I guarantee that no matter how hard you try, you cannot eat enough carbs to add 2-3% body fat over night. ;-)

Measuring body fat via electrical impedance (like these scales) is probably best done at night when your body is hydrated.

  • Just have it as your cheat meal. I personally would also go to the gym right after to burn off as much of the flood of carbs as possible.

Did you know that Gelato has 0-8% fat while ice cream is 16-30% fat? Ice cream has air in it to make it softer, so the serving of gelato might look slightly smaller than regular ice cream. When you buy gelato, its usually always fresh and doesn't have any artifiscial preservatives, while ice cream is always mass produced so it has tons of preservatives. Supposedly gelato in general has less fat and less calories.

I found a much better gelato place (than gelato vera) called Cafe Zucchero in downtown san diego in Little Italy.

    From: http://msnbc.msn.com/id/3079283/

Ice cream is a frozen food made from a mixture of dairy products, containing at least 10 percent milkfat.

“Reduced fat” ice cream contains at least 25 percent less total fat than the referenced product (either an average of leading brands, or the company’s own brand.)

“Light” ice cream contains at least 50 percent less total fat or 33 percent fewer calories than the referenced product (the average of leading regional or national brands.)

“Lowfat” ice cream contains a maximum of 3 grams of total fat per serving (1/2 cup).

“Nonfat” ice cream contains less than 0.5 grams of total fat per serving.

“Overrun” refers to the amount of aeration the ice cream undergoes during its manufacture that keeps the mix from becoming a frozen mass. Overrun is governed by federal standards in that the finished product must not weigh less than 4.5 pounds per gallon.

“Superpremium” ice cream tends to have very low overrun and high fat content, and the manufacturer uses the best quality ingredients. This category accounts for just 3.5 percent of sales.

“Premium” ice cream tends to have low overrun and higher fat content than regular ice cream, and the manufacturer uses higher quality ingredients, and is the largest category in terms of sales with 51.5 percent of the volume.

  • How about, "Help, I've been programmed to feel pain.."
